"Thunder Road" was on the other day. My wife and I were commenting on how stylish Gene Barry's 1957 Chevy squad car was. Somewhow, at the end of the movie, it turned into a Buick, for no apparent reason.

I was disappointed with Thunder Road last time I saw it, I didn't remember the love story being so much of the movie - and the dialog..................so corny!

Yes, there were police Darts round here in 1960-63, usually hood down as the headroom wasn't wonderful for a big man wearing a hat otherwise. They had automatic transmission, which was a standard, but rarely taken up, option. I think Hertfordshire had them, but the ones we saw were Metropolitan (London) Police, like the one in the above photo.
They were good for nearly 130 m.p.h. (rather less hood down) which was quite fast for the time.
I had some Darts from 1966 onwards, but the police no longer had them.

I did some work on a Dart a couple of years ago, what struck me was the smoothness of that V8, that and the fact that the doors opened when I put a jack under it!

A lovely car though, with that 'so ugly it's pretty' look.

The engine was wonderful except that when you needed a crank regound, the machine shop had to dress a grinding wheel down to cope with the 7/8" wide intermediate main bearings: it didn't please them.
The later cars had an extra structural beam under the door cill which helped the stiffness for when you jacked it in the middle - until it rusted away, of course!
And you can't see the look of it from the driving seat.
