grob mystery 2016.01.31 (01) GDR selfbuilt BMW
« on: January 31, 2016, 10:40:53 AM »
I do not have any information about this vehicle despite this:
GDR registration, probably built on a prewar BMW chassis.

Does anybody know what it might be and has some proof?

I'm sure the base is is an early IFA F9 from Zwickau production (maybe even DKW F9 prototype) and no BMW or EMW. Because of the B-pillar probably a convertible sedan. I can not find a photo of an so old F9 convertible sedan. Here's a photo of an early F9 sedan prototype. What do you think?

I'm looking for a better photo than comparison!

I think it helps to try and look through the coachwork to the dimensions of the underlying chassis. This is an extremely crude comparison (especially with the cars at different angles), but I think it shows how much closer the puzzle car is to the pre-war BMW than to the IFA. This is especially apparent in the distance between the passenger compartment and the rear axle. Notice how the doors on both the puzzle car and the BMW have been shaped to allow for the rear wheel well and fender.

For our non-German speaking members:
"The short wheelbase had also surprised me. For me, the basic shape of the fenders, in combination with the frame of the windshield and the GDR license plate, was the main reason for thinking of a "chopped" early IFA F9 convertible sedan (the B-pillar also looks cut off). Of course I may be completely wrong and it is best to look again for the right photo for comparison."

Thank you Wendax.

Well, in my eyes also a tiny old Dixi or 3/20 could be the basis car as it is very short and narrow obviously.

But this still is all just speculation.

I hope someone will find a proven story for HK 54 - 97 one day.
