A mystery
« on: July 17, 2007, 02:58:47 PM »
Don't even expect me to know what it is - it was on a film I was scanning. I took this picture in 1969, that's all I know, and the garage no longer exists sadly.

Here's an action shot but the cars don't even make the rookie scale. Fun though, going down memory lane.

IIRC there was an Autocross Championship-winning car in the 1960/70s called the Buffi-Mowog (or similar). Perhaps this is it although I seem to recall less bodywork.

No idea.

Rear wheel drive so presumably rear engined - is that a carburettor intake behind the driver's head.

The body looks quite professional so could the basis be a proprietary kit for converting a VW into a 'beach buggy'?  Being a two seater body bears this out.  But it looks as if it may have a radiator.

Autocross, or grass track racing, specials were very much a case of adapt what you had.  I have seen pictures of an ex-Formula 1 Lotus 18 chassis being re-engined and forming the basis of an autocross car

What I like is the marshal behind the - one - straw bale with his flags! At Meonstoke in Hampshire there was grass track racing with bikes but if I remember this was near Odiham on a Saturday., I'll have to post some more pics I guess as a stroll down memory lane. I used to do scrambling at - of all places - Grandfathers Bottom - at  Morestead Hampshire at the time too. I only sold my Greeves trials bike a couple of years back and I'd had it 30 years but someone wanted to campaign it.

Not a VW-based chassis, as you can see coil springs on the front and you can't see trailing links. I agree rear engine and probably with a radiator.
IIRC the thing I quoted had a rear-mounted Mini drive train and the rest came from the BMC parts bin (hence MoWoG - look it up ;D)
Body could well be beach buggy of course

No beach buggy body this in alloy. Here's another one for you....

And some Minis! These shots were taken with an Olympus Trip 35!

Although there are some similarities, I don't think this is the twin engined Bufi-Mowog.
See below a magazine picture of that car.
It could be modified though...

Well done Oswald!
I half-remembered Bufi-Mowog and had no photo to hand. I am not sure it was always twin-engined, but if it wasn't I certainly don't know which end came first. All too long ago.

I have to be honest here: the Bufi-Mowog was the car that I thought of too when I saw this post!

It could be driven by a Paul ?? who went on to auto/rally cross a Lotus Europa finished in a velvet like material , could be totally wrong

That could be a front mounted oil cooler for an air-cooled engine (Porsche/Corvair/VW).

Might be a tiny water cooled engine, or another radiator in tandem or even a second in the rear somewhere.

I'm just saying that the radiator looks undersized.

The garage does still exist - I googled for Brooklyn Engineering Land Rover and found this site: http://www.brooklyn4x4.com/history.php The Chandler's Ford address looks right.

I've found this info:
Brooklyn Engineering are still around, but have moved from Chandlers Ford to Nursling in Southampton. Looks like the business has changed hands.
Brooklyn 4x4. "Due to a company re-organisation we closed our Alderbury branch on 1st May 2012. The business has been transferred to our Southampton branch"
