Whatsit? I don't know #553
« on: August 24, 2011, 08:54:09 AM »
Ever seen this ?

Yes, it's a Jeep, but can you tell us what is this body and who modified it?

I don't know myself, and believed it would be more interesting to post it as a puzzle, rather than an "information request".
Happy sleuthing, pros.

I have two photos of two other Jeeps of the US forces military police in Germany.

The one has a similar rear end and the other a similar front end...

But I do not have any information, too.

Were they a one star generalīs daily runner?

They do look roughly similar (the rear end more), but just roughly.
Ther modified rear ends make me think added top and doors to keep their passengers of the rain.
The "general" idea is interesting. Can something be found through the license plates an other numbers painted on the cars?

I haven't found the puzzle car, but I found an ID for the Jeep posted by Grob in reply#1. Same license plate.

I've found this  Jeep that Ed Witos of Fords, New Jersey, was assigned when he was stationed in Germany with the Yankee Division of the 101st Infantry Regiment.
Ed Witos wrote: "I drove the commander of the 101st while we were fighting in the European theater. During that time we experienced cold, rain, snow, and whatever. With the help of the mechanics in our unit we modified the fenders as you can see from the photo I attached. It helped in preventing muddy, cold faces at times when driving. Next we modified or made wind deflectors using material from a damaged fighter plane."

This one does share many elements with the puzzle pic jeep, but there are some differences... Same builder?

Another modified Jeep used by the U.S. military police in postwar Germany, similar to the one in reply #1.  Also posted by Grobmotorixi another topic http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=24709.msg274038#msg274038

If you genuinely want an answer to this question, would it not be sensible to post the query on the main board rather than in this obscure backwater to which only about 10% of forum members have access.  Many who have not reached the illustrious heights of being classed as "Professional Auto Puzzlers" nonetheless have interests and niche knowledge.  If, on the other hand you are simply posting a topic for pros and feature writers to chew over then it is logical to post it here.

When I raised this question on the forum feedback board, one of the moderators suggested I contact the individual posters.  I did so and received an extremely rude reply from one of them on the lines of "I can post things where I want".  Now I have reached 200 points, I am using the same argument to justify taking the opportunity to reopen the question.

Of course I'd like an answer, as D-type asks.
So I'll follow what you suggest and move this one to the Pro board, at least for awhile.
If nothing comes out of it, I'll consider the Black Hole, or back to this less crowded one.
