The Union Express Carino is a 1960s moped, perhaps it was based on one of these?

It seems to be that.
The car is a bit of a mystery to me and the only reference to it is from a letter in an old German magazine - see below:

The letter is about 2 subjects: the writer is looking for parts and information for his Express Carino moped and also has an inquiry about the photo. It is no stated that there is any relation.

Note the worth ausserdem, which means also.

To me, it still is an unknown Portugese vehicle.

Ah.......unfortunately I don't speak German and didn't think to translate the letter  :-[
Thanks Guido, it'll teach me to be more careful in future.

So, what to do..
As it's my mistake, I'll leave the point I awarded to Tom_I and move the puzzle from the "solved" section to the "black hole" as an unsolved puzzle for future discussion.

I hope everyone agrees on this.....?

No problem  ;)

I think I've found the guy who wrote the letter. I've sent him an email to try and find out if he ever found more information on this vehicle.

I'm quite happy to relinquish the point. It was only gained by guessing at clues, after all.

I'm more interested in finding out what this car is, if we ever can. :)

Hopefully we can learn more on this car - probably a 'one-off' built in Portugal.

Well Tom although we didn't find the real identity you answered the clue correctly so I have no problem in you keeping that point - it's only a game after all.
I'm just as curious as you as to what it is - perhaps time will tell.

After thinking this puzzle had been solved - it still remains a mystery and I'll (somewhat reluctantly) move it to the BH in case someone out there knows something more.
There's still a point to be gained by a positive identification.

I've found and contacted the man who made the inquiry 20 years ago. Sadly he didn't receive any information back then. He confirmed that the moped and car have no relation.

I guess it's a question of wait and see if anyone knows this obscure three-wheeler

The photo was taken in the late 80s in northern Portugal, by the father of Axel Wolters.

That's the identify of the inquisitor's moped, but the puzzle vehicle remains unidentified.

The Union Express Carino is a 1960s moped...
