So, for a point, what is this car called, and what is it based on?

It looks a little bit like one of the Abarth Simca GTs, but we know that it's not Italian. Is it Simca-based?

British maybe? It has (seemingly) Dunlop sticker on the front fender. Was it an open top sportscar previously?

It is neither French nor British, and I don't know if it was previously open topped. I think it might have gull wing, but I don't know this 100%.

It's clearly rear-engined, but I can't think of many Japanese cars of that period (I'm assuming late 70s/early 80s) which had that configuration.

It's not MR2-based (pre-dates that model, although you are getting closer!) and no Mazda relationship here.
