Wendax 439 - Articulated bus by Gaubschat?
« on: January 04, 2012, 12:41:14 PM »
A puzzle for heavy metal fans  ;)
I don't know this bus I photographed in 1989. It looks a little bit like a Kässbohrer body, but there is a (ski?) cabinet at the back and the door is behind the front axle, a feature that usually disappeared about 1950.

For one point, please respond and prove your identification.

Looks familiar in some way.

Has it been a race transporter or service mobile in its earlier life?

I really don't know. I just saw it in this state in a rear corner of the long gone Güterbahnhof Hamburg-Barmbek.

I would say it's a converted bus, perhaps used for carrying bicycles or something tall and narrow?

To me it looks like it once was an articulated bus, now separated from it's trailer and perhaps converted into a mobile home?

That's a possibility I hadn't thought of yet. Gaubschat built similar ones:

I think that's it, yes.
It has the cutout for all the drawbar gubbins under the doorway.

I'm positive it's a Gaubschat. All the others seem to have a harmonica over the full width of the bus. I've found this slighty different Faun also with the door behind the front axle.

I feel generous and give you a point for that articulated bus hint, but I leave this still open for a final identification of the puzzle bus.

Is it a Bussing? The example below looks pretty close - the headlights are in the same place, as well as the design of the destination board:

I don't think so. Those items were quite common, but Büssing buses usually didn't have a large "hood panel" in the front , because their engines were located "underfloor".
