I understand they did make a small handful of them.
I remember from road tests of the car at that time that it was said to be terrific to drive, and thinking "If only they'd given it a half-decent body it might have sold a few".  I'm not sure they ever actually sold any at the time before they went bankrupt..

There are many many examples of manufacturers thinking that appearance was unimportant and what really counted was how good the cars were... It was the story of BLMC's life.  They're nearly all littering the graveyard of Might-Have-Survived now.
