Wendax is right again.
Two examples of this engine were built at the time. One of the engines was installed in a Beetle, another in a T1 transporter. Helmuth Bott, who was brand new at Porsche at the time, drove it approx. 25,000 km, consumption 6.0 - 6.5 l/100 km. The project disappeared into a drawer due to poor export prospects.
To mark Porsche's 50th anniversary, Helmuth Bott, now Head of Research and Development at Porsche AG, searches the archives for interesting projects from the company's history. In the process, he stumbled across the Diesel Beetle.
As the documents were still available, the reconstruction could be tackled. Because of the larger main bearings, a three-part engine housing from the 356 was needed, but that was probably the least of Porsche's problems. New pistons came from Mahle, and the injection pump was found in Bosch's museum collection!
Then it was time for test drives on the Nürburgring: 25 hp, 0 to 100 km/h in 60 seconds, that could have been the longest lap on the Nordschleife, although drivers on Velosolex have also been seen there...
