Just an old engine.

For one point, please respond and identify this engine.

A Wilhelm Maybach design? It appears to have a very sensibly-sited water pump, in itself an uncommon feature on a machine from 1909?

I don't know who designed the engine, just the company, a year and the hp outout. The pictured engine is a bit younger than 1909, although its origins were from about 1909.

Lucky guess!!......so it was likely to be a Hans Nibel design; 25/45hp from 1912, perhaps?

The power output is quite close. A little hint: the engine had its first appearance under another brand!

Ah!....then perhaps a 24/40? Possibly by Karl Ketterer who had worked for Süddeutche Automobilfabrik (S.A.F.)?

Sadly, I am hampered by my vestigial command of the German language. Nonetheless, I have remembered a couple of lines from Thomas Mann, and, on a good day, can sing along with "The Goggomobil Song" on YouTube. ;D

Yes, it is an engine that started being built by the Süddeutsche Automobil-Fabrik Gaggenau. Not the one you guessed though. One last hint: it was not used in a car, but a truck.

It is a Benz-Gaggenau engine and the engine code starts with R, but not the one you named.

Yes, it was described as a 1914 Benz-Gaggenau 50 PS truck engine. So it has to be the R2. One more point for you.

Thank you for the point, this was once again a very special puzzle. My source says that the R2-engine was used in trucks (for example Type GL 12, 1911-1913) and busses (for example Type BO, 1913-1914).
