I'm getting close!  Found what is probably the source of the picture, and the operator and the city, and a likely year.  Still working on coachbuilder and model.

I found a nearly identical bus, supposedly on a Krupp chassis, attributed to "Bauer" from 1936.  Presumably Peter Bauer? 

Maybe O 3200?  You have already ruled out the larger and smaller chassis.

Yes, the design was created by Peter Bauer. The year of construction is not required. Unfortunately it is not an O 3200
There is one more attempt for the right body builder.

There are Opel Blitz busses by Schumann that have a similar grille, with the diagonal bars and chrome surround.  Is it that?

Sorry, I believe something is lost in translation.   Yes, Mercedes, for sure.  However, I read the above to mean that the design was created by Peter Bauer, but the body was built by a different coachbuilder.  That seemed strange to me, but that's what I've been looking for.  So, "Mercedes" and "Peter Bauer" are correct and you are looking for the model designation?  How about O 3750?
