BMW 700 RS engine, Ludwig Apfelbeck?
Engine with internal designation M107
The valve control is via king-shaft with bevel gear drive to the inlet camshaft. The exhaust camshaft is driven by a chain - which gave the engine the name “chain dog”.
The engine housing was adopted unchanged from the BMW 700, as were the oil pump, oil cooler, fan wheel and fuel pump

Yes, it is the 107 BMW RS, Alex von Falkenhausen was head of engine development when Ludwig Apfelbeck designed the engine.
The "Kettenhund" ("Chain Dog") was also intended for use in motorbike racing. Fritz Scheidegger (CH) had acquired one and wanted to use it in the 700cc sidecar races in the UK. Test drives were carried out in Hockenheim in the spring of 1967. But on Easter Sunday at Mallory Park, the brake system on his 500cc sidecar failed and he was killed in an accident.
