MJW #570
« on: August 18, 2011, 10:42:57 AM »
Another mystery for me.
I know the make and year but don't know the coachbuilder.
One point on offer for anyone who can fill in the details.

The octagonal lights and the radiator shape suggest that the base car is an MG.  Too big to be a Midget so probably a Magnette - I'm afraid I don't know my prewar models.

Yes that's right - it's a pre-war MG, I believe from 1934.
I'm going to give you a point for that but keep the puzzle open in case anyone knows the coachbuilder (I don't) for another point.

You're correct there Allan!

Looking at the photo again, I'm wondering if this is a model rather than a completed car.....
My source only comments on the design of this strange MG.

Time for the BH.......
There's still a point on offer on this 1934 MG to complete the story behind it - coachbuilder/designer, etc.

Licenceplate GG-343 was on this car.

This license plate was (at a time) owned by Mr Giulio Gallone, director of E. Gallone Ltd, icecream manufacturers, Northhampton

I do have a magazine clipping in my archive, but only the picture was cut out, so no description of the car.
It came from the magazine Thouroghbred & Classic Cars, July 1979

I hoped that, as I had a run of T&CC, I could knock this on the head. However I gave up on that magazine a year or so too early so I can't.

So, was the coachbuilder based in Northampton?

Although woodinsight did log-in here in May 2017 he hasn't actually posted any replies at all since May 2014, so I don't think any answers  to your question will be forthcoming.

According to some coachbuilders page:

"MG(-Jaray) PA-Midget 850-Airline/1935.
It was built-up in order of a bussiness-man, living in CH-Luzern. This text-note I have with the book-title 'Streamline-cars in Europe/1900>45 - RFJ-Kieselbach/1982."

Definitely not! Besides the fact that the puzzle car doesn't look like a Jaray design at all, you can find a design drawing of the proposed Jaray MG in the same book:
