A USA self-build?

Hmm, thought so, as I recall seeing it not too long ago. although of course frustratingly I can't now recall where! From memory, is it Alfa Romeo powered?

Yes, and that's enough to earn you a lock!

Thanks for the Lock GTE. I'm now going to uncork a decent bottle of red to help revive my dormant memory cells to remember more about this one-off racer  :)

Mine came from the Auchan supermarket in Dieppe, bought only last month when I dashed over to France for 24 hours for a meeting at Alpine, just days ahead of the Lockdown. It now seems like a lifetime ago...

Thanks again for the Lock GTE.

All I can find is that the car was called the Alfa Romeo Special, a 2.5-litre one-off, owned by Warren Layne of the Layne oil dynasty. The car was raced at the Alvin Callender Field, near New Orleans, in July 1955, where driver Bob Schroeder took it to second place in a feature race at the event. Is this enough?

That's the car! I have more history (e.g., in '56 it went to Jim Saunders who installed a 5.6 liter Ford T-Bird motor and renamed it the 'FoMoCo Special'), but that's definitely enough to identify it.
