What was this car called?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Lavrakas

This looks like the 1936 Lagonda Rapier Granville Grenfell Supercharged Special, reg GPB 130.
The more I consider the nature of speed, the more mysterious I find it.

I'm afraid it's not that car.

I would guess it's a Morris special
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

There's a VERY tenuous connection - it would be unfair not to mention that. However, I have to add that it's not a Morris special.

or if not, perhaps Wolseley.

No. You're getting further away from that very tenuous connection.

Does not look like an MG?

That is the tenuous connection to Morris. It is based on an MG.

Prewar?

I don't know when this car was constructed, but the donor base is pre-war.

Would the donor's model type help - was it a saloon?

Not really. The puzzle image would be difficult to find. All I know is the RAC horsepower rating for the engine, and the registration plate details.

BTW it isn't pre-war - it was first registered (not in this form) in 1946. Sorry about that.

Is it known then simply as the 'Something Special'

Yes.

Would it be known as the Rider Special - an 8hp MG except for wheels, front axle and bodywork. I suspect it was built from a damaged MG otherwise why would you go to all that trouble, - it was apparently very well built.
Whatever, it was for sale for £325 in 1950!

Well done. That's the car. Registered KVX399 and first on the road in 1946. I'd forgotten about this puzzle!

Another point to you.
