IRIS, 25hp, 1905, designed by I.M. Dehavilland. The name IRIS was said to represent the fact (or hope!) that "It Runs In Silence".
That's it!
Ivon M de Havilland (1879-1905), who designed the Iris, was the elder brother of Geoffrey de Havilland, founder of the de Havilland Aircraft Co. In 1909 the Iris company made an engine for Geoffrey de H to his own design, which duly powered his first aeroplane.
The aeroplane engine was certainly not silent, so we understand!
