Who is this driver/builder, and what powers the car?
-
Certain features suggest a Ford V8 based special.

Certain features suggest a Ford V8 based special.
Yes it is. It's not a well-known car, so no lock yet.
-
Experts?
-
That photo has an Australian look, so is that where it's from?

Sorry, I'm afraid it's not.
-
Could the photograph have been taken in Singapore or Malaysia.
-
Could the photograph have been taken in Singapore or Malaysia.
Not either of those.
-
Can we start with 'what powers the car' and I say a FORD V8.

That's already been ascertained - see Reply #1. If you can find the country, you can find the builder.
-
The van at the rear could suggest a colonial country and the period circa 1950's however the car itself could well have been built in the 1930's.

I don't know the exact build date, but you are correct - the photo was taken in the 1950s.
-
If not Singapore or Malaysia, is it somewhere in the Far East?
-
Or maybe India or Ceylon.
-
Or maybe India or Ceylon.
Not the far East or indeed Asia at all.
-
Could it be Jamaica.
-
Could it be Jamaica.
No.
-
Somewhere in Africa.. South Africa?
-
Somewhere in Africa.. South Africa?
Not on that continent.
-
How about the West Indies.
-
How about the West Indies.
None of those countries.
-
Somewhere in South America.
-
Cuba?
-
What we've not asked is if its origin is actually no more obscure than the UK. Consider that asked!

;D. Not South America, Cuba or indeed the UK. I think we've covered half the world now - still plenty of countries left...........
-
USA then?
-
USA then?
No.
-
OK, so it's not North or South America, Asia, Africa or Australia, so that rules out all the continents except Europe.
It doesn't look like a European scene so it must be an island; in the Caribbean?

No. According to my notes it's on the mainland.
-
Mainland Europe you mean?
-
I don't think we've ruled out non-USofA North America, have we?
-
Mainland Europe you mean?
Not North America. I was a bit too loose with my hints - mainland Europe it is.
-
Portugal?
-
Portugal?
Yes it is! Who is the driver? LOCKED for you.
-
I haven't a clue. De Souza?
-
In 1936-1937 three racing cars were built by Eduardo Ferreirinha and were known as 'Ford Especial V8's '. Later a road version was built known as the 'EDFOR' There were another four of these. All cars were built in Porto. The first car to race after WW2 was in 1947 so I am assuming that the driver of the car in the picture is Augusto Madureira.

This puzzle is presently locked for D-type. I'm afraid anything you post on here can only assist him in his endeavours.
Sadly for both of you, this is nothing to do with those cars. Nor is the builder De Souza.
-
I am not bothered. It is not a worry !
-
Sorry! When I said "I haven't a clue", I meant to add "Please unlock".
So them as might know could have a try, please unlock.

OK. Unlocked - open for all.

It looks late 40s or early 50s and seems to have a USA chassis, perhaps a Chev Fleetline sedan or something similar. But what is a puzzle is the lump to the side of the bonnet, which suggests some sort of side-draft carb setup. That would probably exclude side-valve Americana, so the Chev engine or Buick or Nash are all possibilities.
Or I'm way off the mark, which is indeed an even better possibility. :D :o

We already know that it's Ford flathead-powered. I can't tell you any more about any modifications to the engine.
-
Is it a common Portuguese name - like Fernandez?
(Fernandez-Ford has a certain ring about it)

I ill have to check this later. In my notes I have written two names - one is (I imagine) fairly common, although it's not Fernandez. The other is aristocratic, and I think that's the driver.
-
I have now had a chance to check as many internet sources as I can find. I am not sure now that the driver was actually the builder - my apologies if I have mislead anyone. All I need is the name of the driver, which is the aristocratic title I previously referred to.
-
Felcom
-
Felcom
No.
-
Don Fernando Mascarenhas?
-
Mário de Araúdo Cabral?
-
Francisco Augusto de Quadros Vidal Corte-Real Pereira?
-
Thanks for all your perseverance. All I have for this driver is his aristocratic title - an internet search does not reveal his full name.
-
It seems that the commonest titles are Dukes, Marquises and Counts - is it one of these?
-

Yes indeed. He was the XXXXX of XXXXX XXXX.
-
Count of Campo Belo
-
Count of Fonte Bela?
-
Count of Fonte Nova?
-
Neither of those. He was indeed a Count.
He was a national champion in a certain type of motorsport in Portugal.
-
Count of Monte Real? I am searching a list of counts ........
-
Count of Santa Cruz?
-
Count of Sousa Rosa?
-
Count of Monte Real? I am searching a list of counts ........
That's him! He was Portugese Hillclimb Champion in 1952 in this car, beating rivals in Ferraris.
Another well-earned point.

I thank you
