I've had a look at other images of this car, and can't work out what that black unit is for. However, it is nothing to do with a hydrolastic set-up.

This looks like the Fiat-powered M.Z. Formula 850 racer; M.Z. standing the car's creator, Mario Zambarbieri.

That's because it is. Built in 1968 in Milan. Well solved..
