I think I know this one: Edward Sawers, the father of a (late) friend raced a Douglas Light Car at Brooklands and I do remember being surprised at how different his car looked from the few production cars made by Douglas (which was really a motorcycle manufacturer. I think the driver in the photo may be Mr Sawers but won't put money on it.

I don't know the driver, but you're correct. It's a racing version of the Douglas light car.

I've found a copy of the puzzle picture on p1052 of Motor Sport of November 1991 where Bill Boddy captioned it as "Edward Sawers' racing Douglas light car. . . "
He didn't actually say that it is Sawers at the wheel, but it is implied.
November '91 is the last but one of my 1950-91 run of Motor Sport so only just made it.

I got fed up with all the dust and dumped mine from 1980 onwards. My 1950-1979 run is almost complete. As I understand it, their online archives are less than satisfactory.
