Is it a stock Trabant engine, or is it converted to run on another kind of fuel ?

I'm puzzled.  Any electric engine, whether brushless or conventional, is a rotary engine and not a reciprocating engine.  So how can it utilise the engine block from a petrol engine?  Can anyone explain please?
