Title: Solved - NEH 5294: Wayne-Nardi-Alfa-Chevrolet - 1950/52
Post by: Carnut on August 19, 2018, 07:06:27 AM
What I need for the point is:

What is this?
Who built it?
What is it based on?
What powers it?

Remember - solving puzzles using 'Google Search by Image' is BANNED on AutoPuzzles!

It's from 1952

That's the one question I didn't ask!
I guess you're about right though..

Yes, it counted as a production model if they made more than one..!
However, this isn't a Pegaso.

Then it looks like a try at Italian styling made in US

No.
I should have said 'US-bodied' rather than 'US-built'.

I suspect it is a Nardi.

Yes it is!
I'll lock it for you until your next reply to fill in all the details.

I do not have the Nardi book so I have pieced together what  I have found, with some gaps.

Chassis no. 948-4 was built by Nardi-Danese as part of a small run of cars powered by Alfa Romeo 6c 2500 engines and destined for the Mille Miglia. This one was built for Ermanno Gurgo Salio with a spyder body and entered in the 1948 race.
The following year it acquired a Motto coupe body and again raced - with little success.
Around 1950 the car was imported into the USA. I have a photo of it surrounded by those responsible, including Tony Pompeo who was to gain fame for importing and racing numerous Ferraris.
However this car did not keep its Alfa engine for long, because it was next seen with a 6 cylinder GMC (truck) engine fitted with Wayne Speed equipment. Wayne may have done the conversion, and there are numerous photos of it being raced (and crashed) by Bill Kerrigan.
The trail goes cold in about 1956, and the car has since disappeared, but in it's later years of racing it was described as a Nardi - Chevrolet, again fiitted with Wayne speed equipment. Whether this was another engine transplant or an error I have not been able to establish.

Yes, that's the car.
The Chevrolet engine was a straight-6, so it's probably the same GMC engine referred to, which was used in Chevrolet trucks.
I thought the body had been replaced with one by Wayne Speed Shop too, but I must be wrong and it still has its original Motto body.
One point for you!  Well done.

The solved puzzle with the title:
Galrot-3 = GMC-powered Nardi Coupe

appears to be the same car.  It includes the image of the car losing a wheel, which may have disappeared from this post.

Here is an advertisement from the American distributor of the Nardi-Danese Alfa Romeo:

It certainly appears to be the same car:

If everyone agrees I'll merge them?
