This is Bugatti T57 chassis number 57756 but not with its either original or current bodywork.  I don't know who the coachbuilder was, in  style a cross between a 101 and an XK120, but the client was the circus owner Jerome Medrano, probably done in the mid 50s. When sold in 2011 it had a more typical Atalante body. As you say, Bugatti provenance is not easy.
The more I consider the nature of speed, the more mysterious I find it.

Other sources say this is 57554 whose original body was put on to 57756 before the 2011 sale. The coachwork in the pic is said to have been designed by Andre Gamet, a friend of Enzo Ferrari's; no photos of it since the early 70s.

That's what I think is it. Chassis 57756 was bought without bodywork and the 57554 Atalante body was tranferred to it.  This left the 57554 chassis in need of a new body.
