I've checked entry lists in the US for these cars, and most were Cooper, Kieft or Swedish Effyh makes. Plus plenty of homebuilts. There was a Trimax but this looks nothing like one.

Is it a JBS ?

I think it's sheer steepness/gradient. A simple straight road up a very steep incline, rather than the meandering lesser gradient of a British country estate. Not sure though.

Most famous is the Pikes Peak, but there are many others

The event was held at Hay Hill in the village of Croscombe to the south-west of Wells on 16 September 1951. It is not mentioned in the splendid Motorsport Explorer of Julian Hunt so maybe it was a once-only meeting. There is an image of the programme cover on the internet but it doesn't mention the reason for the word "American" - maybe an association with US forces stationed there? Snetterton used to hold many meetings sponsored by the USAAF and military personnel used to enter races.

PS Look at the gradient! I think I was correct with my guess. 1:2 with a 1:1.5 max. That's seriously steep.

That's a motorcycle event and I wonder if there was also a car event that weekend. Can't find owt about it in Motor Sport.
Croscombe is between Wells and Shepton Mallet, so east of Wells, and there are sub-20% arrows on a couple of roads there but the event would have been on a private road which I can't find on OS 183
ETA but what I can find is a hill called Hay Hill which is to the SW of Wells near Coxley Wick. No sign of steep roads up it though.
