SOLVED! 1968 MIT Electric Corvair TECH I
« on: October 31, 2010, 02:45:56 PM »
What group of people modified this Corvair, how did they change the car, and for what purpose?  A point is up for grabs!

Is this the MIT conversion to electric from the late 60s?

It was part of an EV competition and used batteries from SEARS

It was called the "TECH 1" and they competed with Cal-tech on a coast to coast run.
The EV Vair used ice to cool the Ni-CAd battery packs and reduce teh internal resistance between cells. There were also problems with the batteries "off gasing".

It had to be towed the last 95 miles to Pasedena ..... The Cal-Tech VW EV Van won due to penalties assessed against the Tech 1.

The 1968 Massachusetts Institute of Technology entry in that years Cross-Country Electric Vehicle Race. Based on a 1968 Corvair supplied by GM, MIT added 2,000 pounds of Gulton nickel-cadmium battery packs. CalTech also fielded an entry, based on a VW bus.
