Bingo! And yet another point.
As far as I know, the car was sold after 1945 and converted from a racing car to a sports car by Chapron.

according to a noted author, the pictured car was #48.773, the chassis was pre-war. Chapron started to build this coupe in 1939, but finished it  after the war. The second coupé was built in 1947, also on a pre war chassis.

The pictured car has visible a split rear window, the other a single one.
On the bonnet side it had a chrome pointed flash (not visible, the other one a grille.
It was possible to relate these difference  to the Chapron building numbers and to the former owners.
The first a pre war number, the other post war.

There was no proof of the chassis numbers on the cars themsellves.

It seems difficult to make a clear classification. The puzzle picture comes from a classic car magazine. In May 1973, it reported on test drives after a restoration. This matches 48772, which was sold in 1970 and subsequently refurbished. That would fit the timing.
The split rear window is attributed to the 772 on the Internet. See also the picture from 1951 from the Sonauto/Veuillet showroom in Paris.
But the chassis number is actually irrelevant: it is and remains a unique and fascinating vehicle.

There has been a lot of discussions about the identities.
For short:
* Chapron order numbers were 6351  and 6517
* the chassis numbers were # 48.772 and # 48.772

Richard A., the writer of some history about these two cars assumed 6351 and 48773 belong together.
