Glowing East

Well, that's about as close as we are likely to get. The name of the car is "East Glows" (when the sun rises in the East, the East glows), which was produced in China, and much more than that, I don't know.

The other half of the name is an adjective...
East Glows
In England we'd call that second word a verb!

I thought I remembered a car called The East Glows, but couldn't find it in Georgano so thought I'd misremembered it.
I've just looked in the Georgano First Edition (1968) and there on page 558 it is, using the identical photo as in post 1, the name as I've quoted made in China Car factory No 1, Peking (as we called it then) from 1964

Opinionated but sometimes wrong

Main Entry: adjective
Function: noun
Date: 14th century
: a word belonging to one of the major form classes in any of numerous languages and typically serving as a modifier of a noun to denote a quality of the thing named, to indicate its quantity or extent, or to specify a thing as distinct from something else

The deal is this...there are several types of usage  for the word...it can be a noun, as in, "Her pregnant GLOW..."; an adjective, usually with a suffix, such as "GLOWING embers..."; and as a gerund, such as "GLOWING is what a firefly does best"... Also, just to throw another monkey wrench into the works, it can be an adverb, such as, "The fire is glowing..."  I'll see if I can find my Rober'ts AMERICAN GRAMMER...I think my ex still has it...but any library should have a copy.

In this instance, the phrase "East Glows" makes the word sound like an adverb, because not only does it modify the subject, it describes what the subject is doing.  The East is GLOWING.  At least, that's what it sounds like to our English ears.  But, you have to remember that we're dealing with a totally different culture here, with a different set of grammatical rules.  The Chinese language has so many different characters and dialects that it is virtually impossible for ANYONE to be completely fluent.  And, the older a person is, the more words they know...

I used to be an English teacher, many, many years ago...couldn't tell by most of my posts, but I was.  Really.

Class dismissed.

I glow
thou glowest
he (she,it) glows

In this case The East is he (she,it) (third person singular).

Typical (if true) speling of "American Grammer"
I though he was an actor. ;D

By the way I found this on the Georgano's Encyclopedya :

"BEIJING (p); PEKING (wg) (chi) 1958;1966 to date
Beijing Motor Vehicle Factory, Beijing

The original car from this factory was a large sedan with v-8 engine made in very limited numbers. This vehicle was erroneously referred to as "The East Glows" in earlier editions of this book."

No entries about "The East Glows".
I found some forums where is reported this name toghether with Zhonggui but that's all...so IMHO someone put a scanned pic of the first edition of Georgano's Encyclopedia with that name and than it lasted!
At the end I think that is a Beijing V8 Sedan!

Someone else had noticed the "East Glows" years before, and dreamed about it since.  Autopuzzles is eventually referred to in this (nice) story about the car.

Thanks to a book by Erik van Ingen Schenau I can unravel more!

You will be surprised to learn that one of these cars, of which 22 examples were build still exists. It has a designation: CB4 and was based on an earlier convertible.

The V8 developed 188hp with which a top speed of 160km/h could be achieved. It was presented at the tenth anniversary of the People's republic, September 28th, 1959. The convertible was introduced around the same time one year earlier. The car has three rows of seats. The car was made until 1962.

I found I was a bit to quick. The puzzle picture does not seem to have a designation and was probably the first of six cars made under the name Beijing. They had the five star of China on the hood, whereas later ones (The convertible and CB4) had a logo.

1. Beijing Limousine first model, 6 made 1958-1959.
2. Beijing Inspection model, open car, 2 made 1958.
3. Beijing CB4 limousine, 22 made 1959- 1962. (one in the FAW Warehouse collection)

The mentioned "Peace" is a different car. According to the same source it was made by Tianjin.
