It has a Thunderbird-style roof, but the rear end is standard Ford Cortina Mk I.

This was a prototype called the Saxon from about 1962, based on the Mk I Cortina. It never made it into production. It is speculated that Ford thought that a strictly two-seater coupe would not have a wide enough appeal to be commercially viable.

Seen one today just outside London UK

Carnut

Surely only one was built?
So this must be it?

A recreation. the original was just a mock-up, and you can see the different side window treatments on each side. Still, I'm glad somone built one as it does look nice, and this looks like a very professional build - needs to ride a little lower though!

Carnut

Right.
I was going to ask if it was a recreation but then I thought it was a bit too good to be one!
Someone did well to find a 2-door Cortina to base it on; they're rarer than hens' teeth!
And did the original really use the grille from the cheapo basic model?  I've never seen a front view before.

Colins 'Saxon' was at the 'Ford - 100 cars 100 years' at Dunton yesterday.
It will also be at the Goodwood revival by invitation.

About 48 photos down and some 20+ photos of the car and builder.
The man in the green T shirt is the builder, Colin Ginn.

The only photo of the original saxon is that 3/4 rear shot from the magazine, so that is all the information that he had to go by.

I have never liked Fords but that one would I would change my mind for

PS. the registartion is age related. he is still after the ERA 62.
The photos of it with ERA 62 were for show.
