Allow me to extend a warm invitation to one of the best racing weekends out there - the SCCA runoffs, this year at Heartland Park, Topeka.
For those who don't know, Heartland Park is a full fledged racing venue, not just some cow pasture, and used to hold Cart races as well as ASA .
It's recently been completely repaved and is a terrific spectator's track. From the top of the bleachers on the front straight you can see the whole track. It also has a mini corkscrew (a slightly smaller version of Laguna Seca's corkscrew) and a long front straight (which doubles as the drag strip - twice a year the nationals are held here, once in the spring and once in the fall).
The SCCA runoffs bring the top regional national winners from all over the country to bang on each other in 30 minute sprint races. For those who miss seeing the MG's, Triumph's, Jaguars, Corvettes and other sports cars from back in the day, this is your chance to see them go head to head. Since the races are so short and it's the last race of the season, no one holds anything back!
From the SCCA website............
"Each year, more than 700 drivers gather to compete for National Championship medals in 25 different classes. The 2006 edition of the SCCA National Championship Runoffs® marks the first-ever run at the newly-renovated Heartland Park Topeka. With drivers, crew, workers and sponsors from all over the country in attendance, the best Club Racers in the country and a new venue, the 43rd Annual Runoffs® promises to be a landmark event."
Heartland Park is about 1 1/2 hours west of KC, easy to get to and plenty of track side ammenities. The paddock is large, but I expect it to be full, so bring your camera! Hope to see you there!
