F1 WILL NOT RETURN TO INDY IN 2008

It's official, sadly...I just saw a local television news story that confirmed the fears that Indy will NOT hold a GP event in 2008.  I don't have a lot of details, but Tony George cited the lack of a title sponsor and lack of a network TV package as major factors in the decision not to renew a contract with Bernie Ecclestone.

I was afraid this would happen when the Speedway announced that the bikes were coming in 2008.

I also get the feeling that the debacle of 2006 was a major factor in Tony's mind during the negotiations...he left the door open at least a crack for future events, but I can't see how a motorcycle race will draw a bigger crowd than the F1 cars did...I'd like to see the LMP cars at Indy...but they probably wouldn't draw a big crowd, either.

Bernie has mentioned possibly moving the race to Las Vegas or NYC...right...

Sad to hear. Hate to lose the US race now, just when I'm starting to follow F1. Wish I had taken the chance to see 'em at Indy.

Still, I understand that Indy wasn't THAT great of an F1 track, all things considered. A street circuit in NYC, Vegas (or DC or Chicago or Miami for that matter) would be an incredible event. I just don't see it ever happening.

F1 doesn't race on many tracks that are that good.
Monaco, and to some extent Spa are the remaining leftovers from the days when you used roads that were there and it was up to the teams and drivers how they coped. Even Silverstone and Monza have become quasi-Tilkedromes these days - and Tilke has just reshaped a bit of Imola.

The same station that broadcast the bulletin also conducted a poll regarding viewers' reaction to the possibility of F1 not returning to the city.  48% said they'd never miss it, and 18% said they didn't care one way or the other...Indianapolis baffles me...the 500 is very popular, the Brickyard 400 is almost god-like, and the Colts are royalty, but F1 gets the cold shoulder.  It just doesn't make sense...if Alonso and Hamilton were driving for Roger Penske, did the double on Memorial Day and sat in the pressbox at Lucas Stadium, the mayor would have to give them both keys to the city.

Go figure...
