This looks like the Australian Cutten Special, made around 2005, which I stumbled across by chance recently while researching one of the other many recent Antipodean puzzle vehicles!

You and me both! Just about every puzzle of mine of recent weeks has been sourced from a veritable mine of Australasian homebuilts. Once you dig into one puzzle, you find a dozen more.

Of course you're right.  It was based on an AC chassis, presumably a pre-war 16/80 and built by Keith Cutten. It raced in the 1954 NZGP at Ardmore.

And for some reason, Cutten copied the colour scheme of Caracciola's Mille Miglia winning Mercedes.
