Based on a Rover?

Yes. This is the car which provided the engine and the basis for the chassis.  However, you must now find who built this car - it was named after him.

Yes. I have 2 dates, during which the car was built. They fall within these years.

No.

PS. I have just attempted to check the date this image was published, and I can't find it! For some reason I didn't make a note at the time I first posted the puzzle , and now it's disappeared. I'm pretty sure I know the decade (!) but I'm sure you were hoping for something a bit more accurate than that. I'll keep looking.

If it's not online anymore I'll never find it anyway so it's not à big deal.

It was only online in the archive of the magazine in which it was originally printed. The individual image was never online. It can be solved if you know which issue of the magazine it was, and that's what I can't provide! I'll let you know when I can track it down.

I have now found the issue of the magazine which contained the image. It wasn't even the decade I thought! It will still need a lot of work to solve..........

PS the body was fabricated by the owner/builder of the car and not by a coachbuilder.

The Martin Special, built between 1930 and 1934. Based on a Rover 14/45.

That was quick!  I think I gave you too many clues  ;D. Well done, that took a lot of work.

In 1969 when this photo was published the car still existed. It was registered BPK40. It was based on the Rover with the chassis cut in half, and the rear part upturned to provide an underslung effect. Wheels hubs and axles were from a Delage. It was severely damaged in a road accident in 1935 when being driven by Tim Carson (of VSCC fame) and the builder sold the remains to somone else who rebuilt it.

The photo was submitted by Graham Facks-Martin of Launceston, Cornwall, but I'm not sure whether the builder lived in that area.
