A major automotive manufacturer created this promotional artwork to demonstrate a particular benefit of one of their vehicles. For a point, please identify the vehicle (make and model) and explain the benefit being demonstrated.

I know it's an oddball puzzle, so I'll provide a little more information before kicking it up to the pros:
  • major manufacturer with annual new vehicle sales in the millions
  • subject vehicle appears in the panel
  • panel was released to the press and displayed at auto shows
  • panel and explanation can be found online (on multiple sites)

1997 Nissan Hypermini concept (then produced from 1999 to 2001). Electric car with contact-less charging system. Used in car sharing programs.

Nissan Hypermini is correct, but the puzzle image was created sometime later than 1997 and does not demonstrate the contact-less charging system. Locked for you to identify the correct purpose of the puzzle image.

The public demonstration project was launched September 2000 by JSK, an auxiliary organization of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). It was intended to promote the development of application systems for EVs incorporating Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) technologies and the popularization of EVs by conducting experimental trials. The results were to be used to build new transportation systems that emphasize environmental friendliness and user convenience.

Overview of the Downtown Rental Car System Verification Test Project

With this system, the operations control center in the MM21 district used ITS functions to detect vehicle positions and their operating status. In addition, two-way communication was carried out between the center and drivers so that suitable information could be transmitted to the vehicles. Vehicle rental and return operations were performed at unattended vehicle stations.

Sorry, but still not it. The puzzle image dates to before this 2000 public demonstration project and demonstrates something else.

Car can be parked at the bottom of an escalator and the driver can jump on it right away in order to catch his train ?

I'll accept that answer. The point is yours.

So compact that it can be driven down into the subway and parked between the escalators. That Nissan Hypermini sure does integrate well with public transport, don't you think?
