Looks like they set the pre-load wrong between on row two, gear 4, and row three, gear 5. That's gonna be a problem!

(Kidding, of course, but damn! I sure wouldn't want to try to set lash and load on that rig!)
Measures with mics, marks with chalk, cuts with axe, beats to fit and paints to match

Dunno if you're right or not, but it certainly could be. Just looking at an image of a Centaurus makes any mechanical bent that I possess simply wither. I love working on stuff but that there is an engine that makes me want to take up knitting.

I didn't bother to count that there were valve drive trains only 7 cylinders (per row) as in Hercules, not the 9 of the Centaurus!
