Thumbnailed Index of Puzzles
« on: September 29, 2010, 08:28:35 AM »
We all know Otto's incredible work on this:
http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=7269.0

I would like to make a poll about:

Shall Otto continue it?

The question is: is it still neccessary due to the thumbnail pre-view we fortunately have since the update?
My impression is that Otto for private or professional reasons didn't find the time to continue the thumbnail index as much as he did in former times.
I appreciate his work so much, but believe it doesn't make much sense with the unforseen abilities of the new board software.

True, but in that index you have 250 cars per page, better than viewing 10 pages, and if you have to search for something, you can use the "search in the page" function of your browser.
I'll add your option to the poll...

Thanks for the poll, Paul.

Underway now is a different task, which obviates the need for a separate picture index of solved puzzles.

I'm wading through the backlog of solved puzzles, and changing linked pictures to attachments. That will take advantage of the newly-added thumbnail feature.

Other admins are welcome to help me with this.  :)

A tedious, Sisyphean task, but worthwhile. I've amended a few hundred so far.

I had already said that the index for a task for a superman and (although he his one) Otto would never make it. The thumbnail feature is a good replacement, although the solved pages are somehow long to upload with it.
I am willing to add smaller linked pictures of my own puzzles (as I already started doing). It's the kind of stupid activity I can pursue without putting my work in anger.  I won't completey replace the attached ones yet- I find it prettty this way, and impossible to do for group puzzles.

The problem is still that (for us europeans at least), a picture I've uploaded on the server will appear in a fraction of a second.
If I try to attach it, it may need six essays and 15 minutes...

Otto,
Since the server was making no trouble today, I went through my old solved puzeles as promised and reviewed a great deal of those I had posted since I was an an editor, with the image embedded rather than attached.
I see that you had already started this. Thanks a lot. I went on, doubling those embedded images with smaller size versions of the same (I sometimes reduced those you had put, it felt weird to have the same image twice and same size. I attached them so that would appear as thumnails. It will save you time, you'll need it rightly with this passel of puzzles of yours.

It may take a little time, as I can't get my puzzles, in the solved section, to remain in any kind of fixed orde, helping me to keep track of what's already done and what remains to do.

Thanks Ray, I started at the oldest puzzles, and started working my way forward. As you say, there is no way to sort by attached or embedded picture. So now, I just pick a random page somewhere between pages 1 and 427 and begin there.

Just a question: is it technically available to have thumbnails in the "recently unread" section?

Not with the current version of the software, as I understand it.

Most of my puzzle titles start with a "w". So by clicking on the subject column, then putting it in reverse order, I have easy access to them. In don't know for sure at what number I started to embed the image, but for the time I have added attached resized pics from  (backwards) Whaddyacallit 507 to about 370, and I am pudhing further.

For the group puzzles I only attach a copy of one of the first pictures.

I made an "index pic" for each of my group puzzles.
