Kilbroney Car Show 2019
« on: September 28, 2019, 11:51:26 AM »
I spent my morning at this classic car show - reputed to be the largest gathering in Northern Ireland. Not sure about this year, but 2018 attracted 1200 exhibitors. The event was scheduled for July but called off because of a waterlogged field, and it rained again today!

No military vehicles, very few commercial vehicles, most of the tractors were quite modern, the autojumble was not particularly interesting, and the field was packed with grey porridge. Who wants to see a Citroen Xantia or a Ford Ka? There was even an MX5 masquerading as a 250GTO!  I refused to look at a Mercedes W123 with stanced wheels and ground-scraping suspension. I'm getting old - so many youngtimers now and I don't consider them classics. (Someone was showing an almost new Mustang!)

I will post some of the more interesting cars.

Rain in Northern Ireland?  Surely not?!
That registration number on the DKW looks a bit odd.
Two letters and five numbers?  I thought there were never more than four numbers?

Yes. I didn't notice that until I posted the photo. The owner was in the car, which makes a change, and I could have asked him.

I think the registration is from the Republic. Their present system is wonderfully simple and understandable, but back in the 50s/60s they were probably running out of numbers and had to allocate 5 rather than 4. The Northern Ireland system always has 4 numbers as you say.

A Panther Rio and a Vauxhall Sportshatch, both at the same meeting, and in Northern Ireland! They're rare to see in England, never mind across the water... Some nice cars and great photos; thanks.

Kilbroney Park is in the border town of Rostrevor. I should imagine it would attract exhibitors from the Republic just as much as from the Province, which obviously widens the scope. There was an awful lot of boring stuff there, but I think most shows are like that.
