I'm sure this issue has been discussed before, but for those of us new (or relatively new) to this forum, it can be frustrating to see an interesting car pop up and then have someone state "this is a repost" and away it goes.  Well, many of us have never seen it and would like the opportunity to "have at it". I realize a search of the entire site will turn up the offending vehicle, but might it not be just as effective to allow the picture to stay up and just carry it on a "no points - repost" basis? That way all of us can enjoy it.  Just a suggestion.

Psst: They never dissapear, but they are merged. Normally, by following the original post, you should get updates on the merged topic as well...

This is an interesting point of view.
I think we can allow a repost to remain confined in the rookie section only and then decide if it deserves another point.

Works for me, so long as they are merged with the originals after the solution.

Sorry to disagree with both Paul and Otto. I believe that the site will be a much worse mess than a 15 year old's bedroom if we do this.
As De Autogids says, the picture never dissappears anyhow.

I agree with Ray. (though it's not my favourite job to alert re-posts and merge topics..)

I can go either way, based on the consensus of this group.

I am waiting to see how this flushes out with everyone before offering my 2¢.

I appreciate the willingness of the moderators to hold a discussion on the issue of reposts. I am also well aware of the current practice of merging reposts, but that really doesn't address the problem. Following the link on a merged repost effectively tells you what the car is . . . and it ceases to be an AutoPuzzle. I'm certain that, as for most of you, the joy of the search is one of the best parts of solving the latest automotive mystery, and simpling following a car declared a "repost" to its merged solution eliminates the fun. I was simply requesting that those of us who never saw the original posting have an opportunity to solve it. Again, just a suggestion.

@fyreline: True, the search is the best part. And true, once signaled as a repost, a car ceases to be a puzzle. But don't you think that there are enough TRUE puzzles here to satisfy anyone's needs?

I believe that a little more attention by those who post such cars is the only answer to your concern.
But I think that our members are usually quite efficient in that matter.

Sure, there are plenty of new puzzles that are fascinating - that's the appeal of this great site. I just wondered if there was some way to have the occasional really interesting car that turns out to be a repost stay available as a puzzle for the ever-increasing (I hope) new members who haven't seen that particular vehicle before. Perhaps there isn't any easy way to do this, and if that's the case, so be it.  Just thought it was worth finding out on behalf of all the "new guys".

There is a grey area when, say, a front view gets solved and later someone posts a 3/4 rear view.  It may not be immediately apparent that it is in fact a repost.  In this case I think the puzzle should be allowed to run its course and then merged as a repost.

As the total of solved puzzles approaches 9000, we are slowly approaching a situation where the only cars left are obscure one-off unbult prototypes, racing specials, hot rods and custom cars.  When this is reached either the forum will stagnate with nobody but the pros being knowledgeable enough to solve anything posted or we will have to formulate a policy to allow reposts.  This could be as simple as saying "When there is a repost, anybody who posted on the original puzzle may not post on this one."  It won't fully solve the problem but will do so partially.

Does it need policing?

If someone spots a repost then they can simply say it is and then it's up to the members.  If someone is really so desperate to amass points by "cheating" just let them.
