Judging by the license plate and the rear camber it could well be a Renault Dauphine-based one-off ("proto" doesn't mean that it has to be a factory prototype). It is from the Département Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

My doubts refer to that rather mid seventies/eighties fake-Countach design. Why should someone equip it with such an old and dull engine*?

* I know.. esp. on that place are many examples of such oddities..

There were Beetle-based Countach replicas, an even older design. Dauphines were cheap raw material, could easily and efficiently be tuned, and already had the rear engine layout.

I give up on this one. I've spent days on it...and can't ID it, although I've found that it competed in the 1899 Tour de France.

Any help?

According to a Jalopy Journal thread it's an Amédée Bollée fils, driven by Étienne Giraud on the 1899 Tour de France. This 1899 Amédée Bollée fils car was a 20 hp 6.3 litre 4-cylinder, and the design was also licensed to De Dietrich, back then still a German manufacturer.
