Historic Road Course

American road racing was revived at Watkins Glen on October 2, 1948, the first major road race run since before World War II. The original 6.6 mile circuit ran along country roads and village streets, starting and ending in front of the Schuyler County Court House on Franklin Street, near the Main Entrance to Watkins Glen State Park.  Racing in the streets continued through 1952.
Today, you can drive the 6.6 mile course through the streets, just like those historic cars nearly 60 years ago.  Along the way, pull over to read the markers, designating happenings along the way.
In 2002, through the efforts of the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Historical Committee, the original circuit was designated onto the National Register of Historic Places and the New York State Register of Historic Places.

Drivers Walk of Fame

The Drivers Walk of Fame, established in 1993, honors the great drivers who have competed at Watkins Glen since 1948, both on the original circuit and at the present track.  Drivers from all classes of racing are honored with sidewalk markers bearing their names.
Take a leisurely stroll along Franklin and Fourth Streets in Watkins Glen to read all the markers.  New markers are dedicated each September during the Grand Prix Festival of Watkins Glen Presented by Chemung Canal Trust Company.

International Motor Racing Research Center

Built expressly to preserve the heritage of motor racing, the International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen is a 5,000 square-foot facility that is both a research library and an archive.  Located on Decatur Street in Watkins Glen, the research facility is available to all interested persons for both serious scholarship and pure pleasure.

The archive is intended to serve as a safe repository for primary documents related to the history and heritage of worldwide motorsports. The Center holds approximately 2500 rare and reference books; hundreds of periodical titles; programs; manuscript collections; historic scrapbooks; posters; historic videos, fine art, and many other items relating to motorsport.  Center Conversations is a free monthly talk series that takes listeners behind the scenes of motorsports.

Wish I could come, but Watkins Glen is a good solid 2500 miles away, and that's right smack in the middle of the semester.

Arrive NY the 3rd and have reserved accomodation 10 miles north of the circuit that evening; leave the 10th. I just hope they've laid in a sufficient supply of good beer though - lol. We have really to sort out a rendezvous though. I don't know the place at all so if anyone can help out with a friendly bar (maybe NOT a good idea) then we'll be there. Coming with the president of the XKE club of the UK, John Burton - a cool cat who has been known to partake of the Baccanalian spirit before falling into the arms of Morpheus. I'll let Ultra have my mobile number before I leave. :drink:

MG has been there.  Perhaps he can recommend a serving establishment we could all rendezvous at.

Well, lessee. I can tell you a really good motel NOT to stay at (that being the one I stayed at.)  The food and bar service were roughly as dreadful as the room.

All I can say is that since the track is now owned by ASSCAR, you should be in hog heaven if you like Miller Lite, Bud Lite Amstel Lite, Corona Lite, or any of the other brands of panther piss that NASCAR dads like to drink. My suggestion is that if you wish to imbibe some truly fine ales and lagers while there, be sure to bring plenty with you!    ;D

The group did not spend any time in the local bars. We probably should have.

Anyway, I am disappointed that PablumPate and Jagman are already overbooked on their vacation schedules. It would have been fun to have them along for the festivities.

Watkins Glen has always had a special charm for me. I went to the US Grand Prix there several times in the 60's, when it was held in October. The foliage was spectacular and people came from all over the world to see the racing. I was there the day Francois Cevert got decapitated by the Armco and his head and helmet went rolling down the track. I was there the weekend BRM experimented with their H-16, before deciding to go with the trusty V-8 for the race.  I saw Clark and Stewart compete there.

But my favorite memory of the Glen was race morning at about 7:30 am, the first engine would fire for morning practice. That was back in the days when a mechanic would stand over the car and open and close the throttles manually until everything would come up to temperature. What a glorious, gut wrenching lovely sound, as the other cars in the paddock soon came to life as well. Cooking bacon and eggs over the camp stove, listening to those mighty race engines wind and unwind (some of them revved to almost 9000 rpm!   :o), well, there just is no better way to begin the day!   ;D

And then, at the start, as they all came snarling up the hill toward the front straight, all those mechanical miracles combinining into a cacaphanous wail that echoed back and all around from the surrounding hillsides. Well, God Himself could never invent such beautiful music. Lordy, it was awesome.   8)

The town? Well, the town is pretty underwhelming.  But I'm not going to see the town. A went to the Historics at Road Atlanta a few years back and just being around all that beautiful machinery is reason enough to go.

Should be a hoot.   :joker:

The wife and I were planning a road trip through the northeast this fall, but shooting more for a mid-October, early November time frame.  The problem is that we both put your tax dollars to work on a daily basis, and September is a very busy time for slaves to the fiscal year such as us. Maybe we can work something out.

It would be a genuine treat to have you in attendance, Rich.

And S&M, if you're gonna do the Northeast, foliage season starts in late September (northern NE) and runs through mid to late October (southern NE). After that, all the leaves are gone and New England cloaks itself to resemble a post nuclear war movie set for 4 - 5 months.    :(     Veteran's Day is just about perfect for viewing whatever it is you want to view.   :)

Look, all my mate John and I want is some good warm brown british beer in a pint glass. Is that to much to ask for? MG, you are sent to the back of the class for frankly failing your bar guide exam with a score of 0/10. Now if it can be a re-run of Daytona 1992 when we were honorary guests in the Budweiser semi then that will be my idea of heaven. I remember going in but not to well coming out....................

I just hope we can pull a few together so we can have a laugh and a chat. See you there.

I offer my most abject apologies, lynx. I am not worthy..... :-[  But I promise to bring along a sampling of brews from our local Coastal Extreme Brewery here in Rhode Island to make up for all that I otherwise lack. And I promise to leave them in the trunk of the Miata under a blazing sun just long enough for them reach the proper drinking temperature for our British guests!   :P

And I'm sure you are all too familiar with the old joke about why the British drink warm beer?  Its because they have Lucas refrigerators!   :lmao:

2,500 miles? That is but a stroll! We are sacrificing our all to make it for a week there and the round trip will be, including road miles, around 9,000 miles.

MG, your abject apology is accepted but I have marked your end of term report with "must try harder".

"There" is everywhere and at the same time nowhere. "Here" is where you find yourself and a place you make the most of. At the same time "hell" is a place where someone is supposed to write about bars and drinking holes and doesn't!

On a serious note, I couldn't give two monkeys for Watkins Glen village but the circuit will be another matter. The greatest perfume ever invented is Castrol R mixed at times with a whiff of methanol. Life is to be lived and meeting people, especially like minded ones, is one of the greatest pleasures given to man. I calculate there are but 98 days (but I'm not really counting) till we arrive at the Glen. It can't come too quickly but your punishment for your school report is the first round. I'm buying the second 30 secs after.
