Dear Powers That Be....
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:37:36 AM »
Could we add a forum for books?  I know there is some numbnutz in I Don't Know who fancies himself a literary person and I have been known to read a ponderous tome or two on occasion. There are others here who seem to have an actual brain and might be capable of reading a story that is more than two paragraphs long, if pressed.

If it woudn't be too much trouble.  Other than my two front teeth, that's really all I want for Christmas!    ;D

I would be in favor of this, but only if the books were of pamphlet length.  My attention span isn't quite what.......oooohh, shiny.....

So, MG, my attempt at keeping the categories limited to make them look busy is being sideswiped.....  ;)

Seriously though, if Karn thinks we should, I will add it.   Before I do, though,  I would encourage you to use the General Discussion area and to create a title in the subject bar in the manner I created the title for this post when you do.   In doing so, you will explain your post and expose it to people who would never enter a book forum otherwise.  :'(

Clearly, the focus of any such forum should be on smart-assed, cliff-notes style summaries of the classics and Oprah's book of the month.

You know, so the rest of us can look smart at cocktail parties, courtesy of all the books MG has the time to read and summarize for us.

If such a forum were to exist, I'd be happy to provide a few quick examplar reviews in the above style, to get us going. I've actually had some time this year to.......oooh! Shiny thing!

Okay, since Karn has stayed silent, here are my thoughts in greater depth.  I am reluctant to start a forum that has no topics to put into it, nor has any demonstrated interest.  Get some book threads going, MG and then I will have to create a special place for.... oh look, it blinks!

Well, based upon the response to my book thread so far......(where is the "snooze" smilie?)...............................it seems safe to say that a separate category is a bit premature.   >:(

C'mon, it's not so bad. I struglle myself with posting what I think are really challenging or cool puzzles, and sometines get no response for days.

FWIW, participation on the site has been off a bit this week, most likely as people get busy at work before shutting down for the holiday, or as they do last minute shopping, etc. I promise to give your book post a serious read, and respond.

There's a book thread? Cool! Where is it?

Frankly, I'm pleased to see that there's a shiny bit thread. Oooooooo... it sparkles...

Guys,

What do we need to do to get more conversational activity going outside the puzzles?  I am open to all suggestions and would really like some feedback.  Please.

???

Since the site enjoys an international membership, perhaps a "favorite drives" thread - with photos - would be fun. I for one would be very interested to hear about great road trip ideas from other countries. There are only so many times one can talk about Route 7 in Vermont before people's eyes start to glaze over.    :-\

As my old Irish grandpappy used to say: "Son? That's an idea. It's no damn good, but it IS an idea!"   :D

There once was a (meanwhile defunct) forum called "Blenheim Gang" which collected on their "Tate Gallery" topic all kinds of cool stuff. Mainly atmospheric period pics from the fifties, sixties seventies.

It is a good idea. Who is going to get it started?
