Solved: PN #1473 -- Murray Frew and his Chrysler Special, NZ

This car is a mystery to its owner! So, identify the owner, the mechanical basis and the year when it was built (and the country) and the point is yours

An Australian special made with components from a variety of cars?

Close to Australia :)
Parts are from other cars (and other type of vehicles), but it is known as a XXX Special for its engine.

Chrysler-powered?
No idea of the owner's name. Is it someone known for racing outside New Zealand, like Mclaren, Hulme, Amon or McRae?

put together the two words

Chrysler and Special and from New Zealand. I don't think you will have difficulties finding the owner :)

It seems to be based on a 1929 Chrysler and was or is owned by a Mike Pero in Canterbury, New Zealand

I think it's Murray Frew and his 1929 Chrysler 62 Six.
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

indeed. Excerpts from an article:
Murray Frew has a big red rowdy mystery on his hands, but he is determined to solve it. The former Windsor man, now retired to Ashburton, bought the Special about six years ago when he saw it advertised from a Kaikoura private collection. He was the only one who phoned about it. Little was known about the car's early history. It was built in 1929, has a Chrysler flathead six (P25) engine and it was obvious from the design the Special was originally designed for dirt track speedway, pretty much the only car racing available before World War 2. Over the years, it has had bits added and removed and undergone design changes. In typical Kiwi fashion, a mixture of bits has been used to make it up, including two kitchen sinks bolted together to make the fuel tank behind the single seat. The radiator is from a David Brown tractor and the front axle from a 1934 Dodge.

Don't you love Kiwi ingenuity!  Not "Everything but the kitchen sink" but "Everything including ..."
