I have an older computer that still works really well that I've decided to give to the grandkids to use as their gaming computer. I legally upgraded it from ME to XP a while back, but it hasn't been used now for over three years. When I went to Microsoft Update and tried to download SP2 it just would not work. Any suggestions?

I don't have SP2 on mine for similar reasons.

Does it give an error message?

No........no error messages.

First, let me say that the computer works just fine, but before I give it to the grandkids I just want to update it - Windows doesn't support XP unless you have SP2 on it.  Also, you can't update Media Player or update to IE 7 without it.

So I go to the right page to download SP2, click on the link and nothing happens - I just get a blank page with "Done" down in the left corner........

I did see where I can get SP2 on a CD by paying the shipping charge, maybe that's what I need to do.........I was just hoping there was a way to download it straight from Windows like I've done with all my other computers.

Are you trying to download the install, or install it from the site?

If both fail, I can download it and try to put it somewhere for you. It could be a popup blocker issue.

I'd skip IE7 and put Firefox 2 on it, but that's just me...

OK, I think I've got it solved............

When I booted up the computer today, a window popped up saying there were updates waiting to be installed - 59 of them in fact! - so after installing them and restarting, I went back to Windows Update, and SP2 downloaded with no problems. I guess I had to have all those other updates in there first or something...........anyway, appreciate all the suggestions!

As to the IE 7 question, I've been running it on all three of my computers (home desktop and laptop and work PC) with absolutely no problems. I was using Firefox at some of you guy's recommendation, but when IE 7 came out with tabbed browsing like Firefox, I went back. There are a few site I visit that just didn't work right with Firefox, don't know why...............

I might be making the jump back to IE7 very soon if I can't get this stupid crashing issue with Firefox figured out.
