At least that's how I rationalize it.

It seems to be working for you.

I, on the other hand, am not married.  ;D

Hey, if I had a bike, I wouldn't be married either.

A pirate had a parrot that wouldn't stop swearing. He tried everything. Finally one day, when the parrot started swearing, he threw it into the freezer and left it there for over an hour.

Finally, the pirate retrieved his parrot from the freezer. The parrot came out, shaken, and said "I promise, I'll be good from now on. But, I have just one question... What did the turkey do?????"

Okay, I've got one..

A group of 5 businessmen were crossing the border into France on the Autoroute when a customs official stopped them.  They were not allowed to proceed, because, as the official said, "You are driving an Audi Quattro, and there are 5 of you.  One of you will have to get out of the car.  I'm sorry."

No matter how hard the 5 men argued, the gendarme would not budge.  He remained insistent that only 4 men would be allowed to proceed in the Quattro.  Finally, exasperated, the driver demanded to see his supervisor.

"Well, okay," the official replied: "As soon as he's through talking to those newlyweds in that Fiat Uno."

I like the jokes and don't necessarily want to take us back to the bike discussion, but you can find lighly used Dynas for what you might pay for a used metric cruiser; plus, too, and also, the Sportster line of bikes is very competitively priced and they've a new version, the 1200N that is pretty badass looking.

In all fairness, I bought a Harley for a couple of reasons:  the desire to have a Harley (as irrational I suppose as the desire to have any type of premium vehicle that suffers from niggling "issues" - ever seen how well premium cars, even Porsches, do w/ said "issues"?); their motors have always impressed me aesthetically (torque and sound); their look is unmistakeably appealing (at least to my eye), and their depreciation tends to be only marginal.

To that end, I will be the first to admit that metric bikes are quieter, more reliable, less expensive to purchase and maintain, and in most cases faster than my DeLuxe.  Still, wouldn't trade it for anything right now.

The other piece is that I've come to understand the need for different bikes for different reasons.  Others on here will recall I'm lusting after a sport bike, the best of which remain from the land of the rising sun......

I'd like a bike one day but I suppose its a tad inpractical to own a Lotus 7 clone + a bike in a place so far north ... plus I always end up buying a cheap, old car instead.

I'd say that a 7 clone is impractical no matter where you are on earth, it's just more uncomfortable in some areas. That said, it's also about as close to a bike as you can get and still have four wheels. An Ariel Atom might be a little closer, but at that point, you're just picking nits out of your teeth.

When I got my bike last year, I drove the Audi exactly three times in the subsequent two and a half months, and that was when I needed groceries.  My formerly "fast" Audi felt like a slug compared to my bike, which isn't even considered all that quick.  Once I get my CBR 1000, I expect that my lust for things Porsche will dim markedly....until the first rainy/snowy day, of course.... ;)

Don't let a short "riding season" put you off, Dent. That just means you have to invest in heavier jackets... down here in Missoula, there's an especially dedicated breed of riders, who can be seen on the roads in anything less than a full-scale blizzard.

With a 20 below windchill, I'm glad for 4 wheels and a roof over my head, even if I do have to spray de-icer and use a hairdryer to get my doors open...

I rode in one day last December where the air temp was listed at 18 degrees; w/ the windchill of me riding at approx 50mph, that was probably pretty cold but like boxer said, I just dressed appropo and was fine.  When I left at the end of the day, it was snowing lightly but it was warm enough where it was melting right away.  The wet roads were pretty similar to that following a fresh rain and were no big deal.

There are guys who ride year-round here too; maybe they're single or don't have children or anyone else who's depending on them....I don't have that luxury and riding is dangerous enough in good weather that I don't want to tempt fate more than I am....

Can't say much about the Subie and ABS because I've not really driven it on ice, but my Audi's ABS seems to be really valuable on ice....could be the $now$ that are on it too.....
