I'm kind of partial to the M109R...

I'm good with my Honda Shadow.

Hell, I can barely afford a car for that $$$, I'll be looking for a bike about 1/2 that price.

Bought the Shadow for $1,200.  Had like 6,000 miles on it when I got it.

Nice. I think I really want a cruiser, but in talking to experienced riders it looks like a better option for beginning is to go with a multi-sport for a few months then get what I want...That way I won't mind the scratches that come with learning...

Oh, I was referring to the price of a new Boulevard in the earlier post.

Cycle World didn't much like the M109R in its latest comparo...

Would buy the bike you want from the gitgo...respect it as you get to learn it and it'll treat you right.....

I am quite happy with my bike.  8)

I have never ridden and they were suggesting the MS is the most forgiving. Then once I am comfortable riding, get what I want.

With resale value being pretty flat on a used bike, it isn't really a bad idea, but I still think I would want to just start out on a cruiser...My biggest deal is finding a bike big enough so I don't look like a circus bear on a mini bike.

Get a big old used cruiser and go for it.

Charlie, did the shop ever take a look at the Shadow? Seems like those top end issues could be hell on a long ride.

And Ming, you've gotta be happy as a clam seeing all of the new metal GM is trotting out.

When the weather breaks a little I will take the bike in.

I am a little scared of buying something too old. I don't know anything about working on bikes and the thought of trying to calibrate 4 carbs to match is a little intimidating!

I know that whatever I end up getting I am probably going to have to get 17" ape hangers just to get them high enough so I can sit up...

If anyone is curious where I was getting the advice:

http://forum.motorcycle-usa.com/default.aspx?f=21&m=309697

It isn't bad advice and I would give it myself to the clueless average joe.  You are, in my estimation, head and shoulders above the average joe.

Old bikes don't scare me like old cars do. There's simply much less to go wrong, and it's all there in plain sight. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 25 year-old Honda if it were in halfway decent shape. Also, bikes tend to depreciate like stones. IMO, early '80s muscle bikes (CB750 et al.) are among the best performance bargains in the motorized universe.

CycleWorld has some pretty good forums w/ decent joes (and a few fanboys, per expectations) who will give you square advice....

I would recommend...well, everyone knows what I'd recommend....

"bikes tend to depreciate like stones."

The prices I have been seeing, 5 yo bikes are priced right up there with 2yo bikes in similar condition.

I used to think I wanted a Hurricane 1000 (back in the day) or V-Max. I gave up on the V-Max when I read articles about ti being one of the most difficult handling bikes. Now I am not looking for something to go fast on, just want to go in comfort.

A friend of mine had a CBR1000 Hurricane for a while. It was in ratty cosmetic condition -- faring held on with zip ties -- and I think he paid $1200 for it. He eventually sold it because it scared the living shit out of him.

Oh...OK. I thought he was talking about what he would recommend for me (in general)!

HD is my first choice, but they are out of my price range (even used).

I am looking at a Yamaha Star or other similar rice burner...

The Star's are nice bikes.   Great value for dollar.

When I got married, my bride to be gave me one stipulation: no motorcycles. I reluctantly agreed with the worst moping hangdog footdragging resignation that I could muster.

Now, some of you may groan and I can understand that. But there are a couple things that you should be aware of: cars were a given. Track car? Sure. Lotus 7 replica: yuppers. Porsche: if the money is there, naturally. Of course, I haven't availed myself of all of the options yet, but I do have a nice track rat E30 M3 in the garage, just waiting for fairer weather.

The other part of this concession: I've never own a bike. I realized early on that it was not good for my health. I live in a seaside town of 25,000 people packed into 4 square miles on the north shore of Boston. All around this town the population and car density is equally abyssmal. Worse, it's filled with Masshole drivers. Add to this my penchant for spirted driving and all I could see in a future with a bike was organ donations.

So I gave up nothing.

At least that's how I rationalize it.
