It would seem to be something that, if given the time and inclination, could have been done quite well, and increased the profitability (re- the advertising "click" revenue) of the rag.  But what do I know?...I'm letting my subscription go this year after over twenty years of subscribing......

The internet kinda killed AW for me.  I subscribed from '87 up until a couple of years ago...I found I could get the auto news I wanted online much faster.  AW's main selling point for years was the idea that they were able to get auto news to the public faster than any other publication, and the entire auto publishing world now has websites of their own; that puts AW in league with everybody else.

I wonder just how many other magazines will follow Winding Road's lead?  I still like to be able to hold something in my hands, especially in the "reading room", but economies of scale  being what they are, maybe DED, Jr. has the better idea...

like to be able to hold something in my hands,

Agreed. I enjoy curling up on the sofa, cat purring in my lap, dog at my heels, on Friday afternoon and catching up with automobiledom. Usually takes less than an hour to buzz through it, but its something I look forward to all week.  Kinda marks the beginning of my weekend for me.  Its worth 80 cents a week to me for that small pleasure.    ;)

I feel that way about books these days much more so than popular magazines, the majority of which share the characteristics that tifosi describes....truthfully, have gotten kind of tired of the car stuff.  It seems to me that there is a homogeneity being reached within various classes of vehicle; econoboxes all the way to supercars are all pretty much the same as others in their class.  I don't really see the significant difference between a Lexus and a BMW and a Merc and an Audi as well as a Nissan or a Toyota or a Mazda or a Ford or a Chevy or a Pontiac or a Buick as well as a Ferrari or Lambo or Porsche or Aston...you get the drift.  There's nothing out there that really "moves" me and the things that come close I cannot justify the price tag.  All seem to be good cars w/in their classes with styling based on varying soap shapes, alloy sizes, and "technocrap."  I'm not excited about hybrids (although I probably should be), tuners, SUVs, CUV's, MP3's, DOT's or anything else having to do w/ the carworld these days.  I'm letting all my car mag subscriptions lapse, filling up the space w/ bike magazines.  While I suppose the class homogeneity critique could apply there as well, it seems that bikes are holding more of my interest...and guitars....

I'm more into classic car magazines than the mainstream "buff" mags like MT, C&D, R&T, et.al.;I guess I like the nostalgia.  Most new cars are cast from the same mold, and the magazines are all alike in their reporting on them.  I'd like to see a car magazine that would deal with the nostalgic aspects of driving, what it was like to drive cars 20, 30 maybe even 50 or more years ago.  I really like Hemmings publictions, although the proofreading leaves a little to be desired sometimes; Collectible Automobile should be monthly, and Sports Car market is  a lot of fun and informative, especially when it comes to European cars.  I subscribe to C&D and may renew Automobile; but i liked it better when DED, Jr. was still involved.

I just can't launch a steamship with a computer in my lap.

I still subscribe to C&D, R&T and AW, but mostly for John Phillips, Peter Egan and God knows what. I also subscribe to Car Craft because I like projects and the thought of 300hp for cheap cash has great appeal. This is expecially true for somebody who owns an E30 M3. And yes, I am aware that a SBC would fit in it, should the need arise. Sacrilage to be sure, but what the hell.

My favorite columnist was always Gordon Baxter...first discovered him in Flying, then when he wrote for C&D, every month was an adventure.  Maybe part of it was that he was from Texas, and often wrote about Beaumont, Port Arthur, Kountze and Silsbee...my great uncle lived in Port Arthur.  Nice place to visit when I was a kid.

Anybody have a line on Brock Yates?  Last I heard, C&D had given him "early retirement", and I haven't seen him pop up anywhere else.  I'd really love a copy of his book Against Death and Time, if my kids are reading this...

have gotten kind of tired of the car stuff

Ah, ennui rears its ugly head.  Tis true that today's manufacturers are producing a dizzying array of models off 2 or 3 platforms, each of which is pretty much the same under the skin.

Our society in general is suffering from over-homogenization to the point that the casual traveller can't tell the difference between Boise and Boston.

Even in racing, we have the incredibly stupid Car Of The Future in ASSCAR :shakehead:

There will never again be a vehicle that makes the impact on cardom that the 356 and the XK-120 did. And never again will Healeys and Jags and MG's race through the streets of Watkins Glen, where. according to legend, one contestant in 1952 put his racing TD into a perfect 4 wheel drift at one corner, slid gracefully into the outdoor seating area of a trackside bistro and decided to order a beer as long as he was already there!    ;D

Personally, I fail to see the individual allure of 472 Harley pilots in a clot moving along at 45 mph, all wearing the same outfit and driving identical machines, but maybe I suffer from myopia on that subject.

It is clear that we have entered an era where there is a fierce competition to distinguish ourselves by joining certain "clubs"  - Harley drivers, owners of rugged, flared, big tired snorting beast trucks or religious lunatics. Its all part of the same ball of wax. The more of us there are, the more we flagellate ourselves to be different from the madding crowd and end up begetting even MORE homogeneousness in our society.

The solution, as I see it, is to force every second person to submit to voluntary euthanasia. Either that, or drugs.    :nana: :drink:

The last car that I really got excited about was the PT Cruiser, and now they're commonplace.  In fact, DCX doesn't seem to know what to do for an encore.  I'll bet that the Mustang, Challenger and Camaro will suffer the same fate...How do you improve a retromobile?

Homogenization is a corollary of centralization within a society.  Centralization in society increases the desire for individualism.  Don't underestimate the effect of the formation of horizontal structures and their eventual replacement of vertical structures of organization.
