Today was road day, windshield time.
Started out trying to best my average high mile per gallon. Best is 31.2, and I was on track, until, really at the last moment I decided to go off highway down Niles Canyon / highway 84. Well, there went my best record, at the time I was at 31.8.
The trip back was what made the day. Thanks to Ultra, I DL'd some prime Prince. So I'm heading up 84 through the canyon, when a delivery truck three vehicles ahead, drops a wheel, looses traction, hooks it and flips. I see the passenger and driver get out, since they had to climb out of the passenger door, once I could see they were OK (a few people jumped out with cameras and cells), I made for a uturn to head back out of the two lane (the truck was blocking both lanes) canyon. Hooked back up with the 680 north and at the 580 Pleasanton on ramp, a no-plate Porsche Turbo merges zipper style in front of me. The highway was commuter clogged. We crawl along in the slow lane until we get to Livermore, where upon seeing the Porsche, reminded me that I needed to head over Livermore Audi for a small interior piece. The Porsche dealership is next to the Audi dealership, he nails it through some connecting roads and I'm just laughing at the quickness the car can achieve. I crawl up behind him at a stop sign, and he pulls into the Porsche crib, and I go one past his turn lane to Audi-haus. In the show room at the Audi dealership is a R8. The Porsche Turbo was silver, the R8 was silver. I'm rather liking the R8.
Over the window sticker is hand scribbled sign "SOLD", as in don't even think about asking a salesperson to sit inside.
Since I'm on backroads and killed my average high miles per gallon, I decided to take a little known road, Patterson Pass, over to the 5. I hook up with some commuters who probably drive this back road daily to avoid the 580. In front is a spanking new SAAB 9-5 Aero, and behind me is a Solstice. We hustle the mostly 1.5 lane wide road over the Pass and down into the valley. The Solstice drops off and it's run and gun on the onramp with the SAAB as we merge with the 5 south. 95 miles per hour and I'm down to averaging 23 mpg.
As the SAAB and I nose and tail it onto the 132, we pass a Silver A3. I've never seen one on the road. It looked odd, the body kit was Audi but not S-Line, and it had S4 mirrors. My guess it was a premium package with the OEM aero kit added.
So, what a day and I got paid.
