Since I'm here and "gotta post", here's an image of the salt flats before things get going.  I'm a coupla days early, but there's madness in my method.  I can shoot the cars as they get set up in the pits and go thru tech inspection.  Today it was a weather report...mid 90s (F) and 40-50 know winds.  I think it's passed now....uhh...the wind...not the heat.  I expect 100+ temps for the whole meet.

That second picture is simply beautiful! Not that the first is not, but the second just stands alone!

As for your method, I always find it interesting to have a look at the cars before the event if possible - all the media will have pics from the race in their reports, while your camera will store an atmosphere, small details, faces, moments - that's much more valuable IMO.

Hmmm...almost like the species known as "WalMartians."   :lmao:

Just got back from the salt flats.  Exhausted.  13 pages of unread stuff.  Hmmm.  Gonna take a long time to catch up.

Attached photo is a team that brought a brand new, untested car to the salt and as the builder was wringing it out and getting his licensing passes completed, he set a class record (254 mph on an old record of 246) and got himself into the 200 mph club.  He's the happy camper in the red hat.

I did the "glamour" shoot and got paid about enough to repair my Canon 7D that ate its shutter.   :yuck:

A tale of two Armstrong's.

For the past few days, there have been volumes of coverage of Lance Armstrong's ban from cycling (even though he passed every doping test administered, throughout his career).

Meanwhile, Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, passed away, after undergoing heart surgery. It was barely mentioned, before the news programs went back to gabbing about the bicycle rider. And, sadly, NBC's website ran the headline “Astronaut Neil Young, first man to walk on the moon, dies at age 82.” The mistake was taken down a few minutes later - but are Canadian rock stars that easy to confuse with an historical figure?

A retired naval aviator who served in Korea, a test pilot, an aeronautical engineer with a Masters degree from USC, the soft-spoken Armstrong lived a quiet life, teaching at the University of Cincinnati, after he made history in 1969.

RIP, Mr. Armstrong.

Unfortunately that's what happens in today's world - fixated on "so-called celebrities" and "being famous for five minutes" :(
RIP Neil Armstrong - you will remembered long after the Neil Youngs and Lance Armstrongs of the world.

It's a racing Ducati, I think 250cc from the late 1950s/early 1960s.

ps - I keep posting my favourite machinery as my avatar!

I think there's yer "run of the mill" taste and then there's yer "gearhead" taste.  Not always the same.  Just consider the 1934 Desoto/Chrysler Airflow cars.  I won't go so far as to say that they're the most gorgeous cars I've ever seen, but to me, they certainly aren't something hideous to run away from while screaming bloody murder, as me granny used to say.  And the replacement models, particularly the Chryslers ARE hideous.  And even those varied so much from year to year that...well, I ramble.  But I like yer taste in avatar vehicles.  I hope I can replace mine with a more successful photo in a month or so.
