Calls for use of replay cameras will increase as a result of this. But replay could get out of hand unless tightly controlled. I think giving each team just one "challenge" per game would be OK.
Tough on the kid. But from what I have read, the ump deserves some credit for fessing up to his error. He was practically in tears afterwards.
Perhaps it is instructive in this hypertensive world to realize that we are, after all, still human and fallible. Lately, fallibility is a characteristic we are not often willing to grant to our sports heros.
I'm not suggesting they overturn the game, or ban the umpire, or anything else. I felt awful for the kid, as did everyone else who watched the game.
I dared not breathe a word of "no-hitter" or "perfect game", so as not to jinx it. My wive leaned over to me when Donald came to the plate, and whispered "is this a no....."
I yelled 'STOP! Don't say i!!!. and sure enough, the son of a gun hit the ball, the play was made, and the call was botched.
It's already being labeled as "the worst call in history". Many will disagree. But Armando knows, as I know, and the millions who are now watching the replay over and over know, that he pitched a 28-out, perfect game.
And for the record, I never considered Jim Joyce a sports hero.
