Deja-Vu, all over again.
« on: June 03, 2010, 05:32:05 AM »
In the spring of 1983, I witnessed Detroit Tiger's pitcher Milt Wilcox give up a hit to the final batter of the 9th inning of what had been a perfect game (no hits nor walks surrendered).

Last night, I saw Detroit Tiger's pitcher Armando Galaraga get 28 consecutive batters out, without surrendering a hit or walk. How? Regrettably, veteran umpire Jim Joyce made a painfully obviously erroneous call as Galaraga took the toss from 1st baseman Miguel Cabrera to retire the 27th opposing batter, Cleveland's Jason Donald. The replays, from multiple angles, show he was out. Joyce admitted, after reviewing the replays once the game was over, that he blew the call, and robbed the ever-affable Galaraga of an historic perfect game, of which there have been only 20 in over 124 years of professional baseball.

What a shame. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.  :(

Calls for use of replay cameras will increase as a result of this. But replay could get out of hand unless tightly controlled. I think giving each team just one "challenge" per game would be OK.

Tough on the kid. But from what I have read, the ump deserves some credit for fessing up to his error. He was practically in tears afterwards.

Perhaps it is instructive in this hypertensive world to realize that we are, after all, still human and fallible. Lately, fallibility is a characteristic we are not often willing to grant to our sports heros.     :-\

I'm not suggesting they overturn the game, or ban the umpire, or anything else. I felt awful for the kid, as did everyone else who watched the game.

I dared not breathe a word of "no-hitter" or "perfect game", so as not to jinx it. My wive leaned over to me when Donald came to the plate, and whispered "is this a no....."

I yelled 'STOP! Don't say i!!!. and sure enough, the son of a gun hit the ball, the play was made, and the call was botched.

It's already being labeled as "the worst call in history". Many will disagree. But Armando knows, as I know, and the millions who are now watching the replay over and over know, that he pitched a 28-out, perfect game.

And for the record, I never considered Jim Joyce a sports hero.  ;D

But Jim Joyce now IS a sport hero, even though he has been laboring in obscurity for 2 decades. Two days ago, nobody knew his name. Today, EVERYBODY knows his name!   :P

He has joined the pantheon of such sports legends as Wrong Way Corrigan, Bucky Fucking Dent and Bill Buckner!    :lmao:

And I still don't see why the League doesn't have the power to review the play and alter the call. Jeeze, what good is a league if it can't correct something as obviously erroneous as this? Who would object? Certainly not Jim Joyce, who is probably getting death threats on his Blackberry right about now!    ::)

Sadly, it appears Otto is right ... he won't overturn it.

BUT, imho, I think it should've been overturned.  It is an OBVIOUS error.  It's not like it's one of those "at one angle it looks this way" and "at another angle it looks a different way" type of situations......bah.
