Home state sights to see
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:40:48 AM »
I'm in the midst of reading Jim Hinckley's book, _Route 66 Backroads_, to prepare and plan this year's Route 66 Drive, September 5-16.  I'm learning a lot about different areas in several states that probably should be explored ... when I have time.  I'm also beginning to wish I could take more time for the Route 66 Drive...and, for that matter, road trips in general....

As I read the book further, I wonder what else is "out there" of interest to see in various areas.  Our own "backyard" has plenty "treasures" to explore ... many more than we have time to see.  This became apparent when I saw the PBS specials on Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway; researched other famous routes (US RT 20, US RT 2, The Dixie Highway, etc.); and, of course, as I've road tripped across the United States.  Reading Jim Hinckley's book is just reinforcing that.

So ... what do YOU consider to be "should see" areas/places in your home state?  What would you tell travelers to check out, if they have the time, as they drive through your state?  What "obscure" and "out of the way" places in your home state come to mind?

We don't have any states out here, I'm afraid :P
It's not denial, I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

Not in Norway, either. But we do have some sights to see:
1974 Fiat X1/9 1500
2005 Alfa GT 1,9 JTD

Holy cow ... indeed you do!

Maybe someday I'll get over there, but dangit...I want to explore the US first ... since I can road trip all but 1 state!

Though not exactly on Route 66, there are similar and perhaps even more breathtaking sites right here in north America. Start in Montana, and follow the Rockies north in to Canada. I say 'perhaps' because, as with what I've seen in the Rockies, I'm sure @re's pictures just don't do Norway justice.

See ... it's those sights right here in the US that make me want to road trip around the US more than I want to explore other countries....  Then again, I'll never see it all in my lifetime anyway.....

I am about as far off Rte66 as you can get and still be in the lower 48...If you ever plan a trip to FL let me know and I will see what I can come up with. I am still too new to be of much help right now.

Up here in NE lower MI I am pretty far off of Route 66 also.  Still and all there is plenty of scenery to see.

I could spend years listing all the great things to see in Montana. Skipping the obvious (Glacier, Yellowstone), here are a select few...

Big Sky Ski Resort. Most skiiable acreage of any hill in the US. Elevation spans from 7500-11,000' ensuring a supply of white powder that would put Studio 54 to shame - 30" fell while I was there this weekend. Located on US 191 between Bozeman and West Yellowstone. Sadly, their parent company (Boyne Resorts of Michigan) is in dire straits. The nonexistent crowds are great for skiiers but terrible for the business side of things. Get there while you can.

Blodgett Canyon. Located just west of Hamilton, MT in the Bitterroot Range. There is a scenic overlook and also a trail that runs the length of the canyon. The fly fishing is supposed to be excellent. This one is less than an hour's drive from my house.

Blue Mountain Lookout Tower, overlooking Missoula. Accessible via a 10 mile USFS road in the summer. Hikers are welcome to climb the tower and visit with the seemingly conversation-starved rangers who man the lookout.

"The Heap". As the name suggests, this is a giant heap of granite located off US 12 near the Idaho border. It's a very popular site for top rope climbing.

More as I think of them.

I'm on the road to Nashville today, but the only music I'll exposed to will be coming from the speakers of a rental car.

I'm on the road to Nashville today,

Hey ... that's not fair!  That's my favorite city!

How long you going to be there?  Business or fun?  Glad you're driving ... how long does it take you to get to Nashville?

Actually, there for just one day. I was visiting Nissan's North American HQ on behalf of my employer.

I flew there and back (but would have preferred driving) and didn't have time eat a cheeseburger at Rotier's, which I try to do each trip. No time to absorb any music, either, nor to visit two previous business associates.

As it turned out, I didn't use the radio in the rental car, either. I picked up a coworker who flew in from another town, and we talked business the whole time.

By the way, if you can avoid it - stay away from US Airways. Wow, do they suck!

LOL!  I try to stay away from flying as much as I can anyway....  The last time I flew ... July 2003 ... for a cousins' wedding in CA.

And, despite your business trip, I'd say one day in Nashville is better than none ;).  he he
