I am sure that the research reported on is correct, as far as it goes, but, having a degree in sociology from a snooty eastern liberal Ivy League college, I can attest to the fact that social scientists know about as much about human nature as meteorologists know about what the weather will be on St. Swithern's Day in 2010.

Research abounds. The game "StarPower" proves conclusively that people will do just about anything to acquire and retain power. Other research indicates that people will inflict what they BELIEVE to be excruciatingly painful punishment on other human beings, just because the "researcher" assures them it is OK to do so.
What has been proven beyond cavil in the financial turmoil around the globe of late is that the teachings of the Chicago School of Economics for the past 60 years, as personified most spectacularly by Milton Freedmarketman, is a steaming pile of horse puckey. When it comes to economics, markets and people do NOT behave rationally. They behave very, very IRRATIONALLY. And so the "rational" economists who pray at the Chicago School church are so full of shit that they all have brown eyes.

For more on this, see Naomi Klein's excellent and exquisitely researched book "The Shock Doctrine".
What we are witnessing is the implosion of US hegemony over the global marketplace, which means that the IMF and World Bank will cease to exist as we know them. Already today, the US has indicated a willingness to relinquish its "right" to appoint the head of the IMF - a position that was unthinkable 6 short weeks ago.
As to "the people" seeking revenge? The average US citizen has the attention span of a nematode and the IQ of a beagle. What they think about anything is a function of the last thing they saw and heard on the idiot box.
Someone said recently "The US is now a banana republic with nuclear weapons." We are well on the way to the margins of the world stage. We ain't gonna like it. There will be protests, perhaps violent protests. But we better get used to it. Because that's the way it is. And all the kicking and screaming and weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth is not gonna alter the course of events one iota. The US finanicial industry engineered the biggest swindle in history. The world will not soon forget, imho.
