Hello
« on: July 11, 2014, 05:35:44 PM »
Hello there, my name's Dave, I'm 28 and from England.

I consider myself to be a car nerd, and love learning about cars and facts and figures about them, so I am here to continue acquiring knowledge I guess.  I only have one question - when answering a puzzle, do I simply post what I think the car is in the relevant thread?

If you are completely sure of your answer, you simply post in the relevant thread.

If you have some doubts, try asking questions which confirm your idea, without giving away the identity of the puzzle.

It might help, to read through solved puzzles and watch how they progressed.

Welcome to AutoPuzzles Dave, the home of where things are rarely quite what they might appear to be...

Ask any questions you like, even if you think they're daft; quite often they turn out to be correct!

Do have a look through the Solved puzzles board, and you will see cars that you are sure you know but which are not at all what you think (e.g. this one:  http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=28226.msg327525#msg327525 )!

The main thing here is to have fun, but you can also learn an enormous amount.  I thought I knew a bit about cars when I joined, but now I know better: I know absolutely nothing!

Hi Dave, and welcome to Autopuzzles. Carnut just said it all, really. It can become very addictive, and if you've got "another half" there could be strife ahead. Please stick around - the content of the puzzles means at any one point in time there'll probably be at least one puzzle which will interest you. You'll get to know each member's particular speciality as the weeks go by - some members like coachbuilders, some like trucks, some like motor sport, and some know every single car that was ever built.

As Carnut said, don't feel that you are going to look silly - go ahead and ask what you like. If anyone is rude or sarcastic (unlikely) the editors will soon sort them out. Everyone is welcome - it's our common interest in cars which is important. You can post your own puzzles whenever you want, it doesn't matter if you haven't solved any. Be careful to thoroughly check through the search facility whether the car has been a previous subject. I'm still learning how to do things, and I reckon most of us make mistakes from time to time.

Good luck. Remember - persevere with it and you will be rewarded. I can't stay away.

Just one slight change to nicanary's comments: To post puzzles you need to be at least an Expert.
In other words first you have to solve 20 puzzles as a Rookie to become an Expert, then the world is at you feet!
Another 180 points later you'll become a Professional and the world (almost) comes to a full stop again..  But that's another story!

Thankyou all :) I cannot see myself solving 20 puzzles any time soon, these are much more difficult than I thought!  I like the challenge though. :)
